didn't you find Death proof a little disapointing? i mean planet terror went balls out (quite literally) on the grindhouse style, yet DP seemed to hold back. in fact the whole second half was picture perfect.

Ever since I initially saw Grindhouse, I've always favored Death Proof, and couldn't understand why so few others did. Yeah, I guess it can be seen as restraining from the film's previous two hours of grindhouse-y-ness, but I just found it to be so more intriguing and engaging.

In fact, to me, Death Proof is far better freed from the constrictions of Grindhouse, and as such, the full-length feature cut is my pick for 2007's best film yet. I still loved Planet Terror, though, and eagerly anticipate buying myself a copy tomorrow.

Count me in as someone who favoured Death Proof . While both were thrilling to me in different ways, in the end I felt Planet Terror didn't have quite the finesse or satisfying ending that DP had.

I love Robert Rodriguez (well, at least lately; he didn't much impress me before Sin City and Grindhouse), but I don't think he's capable of finesse.

I just had a look at his filmography and you're right. Not much finesse there. However, even From Dusk Till Dawn was more restrained than Planet Terror . Don't get me wrong, I was totally into the campy OTT-ness of it, but at the end of the day, I think Tarantino is simply the better filmmaker.

Although, Rodriguez did El Mariachi , which I recall as being completely awesome. It's been a long time, though, so I don't remember if it was very well made and awesome, or just awesome for its content.

This is much more analysis than I ever should do for Grindhouse , though. I really just want to hold up the rock fingers to this one.

B- for Amercian Gangster, i haven't seen it yet but from the trailer, i was already having "best of 2007" qaulity running in my head. I've heard it suffers from its runtime, did you notice that?

Yes, it's definitely way too long. It's a lot of build-up for basically nothing.

But that's not the reason I was disappointed. It was part Godfather, part Goodfellas, part Departed; it was nothing I hadn't seen before, nor was it done in a particularly unique fashion. None of the characters are people, they're just personalities, and as such, a fine supporting cast is completely wasted (including the usually extraordinary Chiwetel Ejiofor).

As for the two stars, well...I'm no fan of Denzel Washington, and this is just another of his arrogant, cocky performances where he does hardly anything but act like a silly alpha male. Russell Crowe, on the other hand, was quite good; he comes the closest to giving a real performance out of anyone in the cast.

When I went to see it, I couldn't for the life of me remember who the director was, so when the end credits came up and I saw that it was Ridley Scott I was pretty surprised since it's such a drab and uninteresting movie visually.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it didn't strike me as anything particularly special.

ah its a shame to here Chiwetel Ejiofor was wasted as he was awesome in dirty pretty things. hmm part departed, part goodfellas, part godfather, that sounds like a damn good thing! so would you say then that it merged into something plain and boring?

Denzel Washington is one of my favourite actors and i'm still looking forward to this role because, as you say, he does do the same style yet i was looking forward to him playing the villian instead of the good guy.

Chiwetel Ejiofor ruled in Serenity, Children of Men, Inside Man, Melinda and Melinda...pretty much everything he's been in.

All those movies I listed are indeed great, but this flick is just derivative.

I'm hoping to see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford tuesday, it looks amazing, i can't wait.

It was really brilliant!

Casey Affleck...just wow. I love Ben and think he gets way too much flak (the dude rocked in Dogma, Chasing Amy, Good Will Hunting, and especially Hollywoodland), but Casey's performance in Jesse James blew me away like Ben never has.

:) glad you enjoyed King of Kong, i also watched it this week :P

Nice!

Yeah, it was great, and just as exciting as any fiction films I've seen lately.

Though did you see the DVD special feature that talks about what happened after the movie came out? Billy Mitchell again holds the record. :-(

damn! i didn't see that, that sucks. The bit that got me most annoyed was When Steve traveled all the way to that funspot arcade to do the score in person, then billy sent a glitching tape and got the record back, that was clearest show of bias and cult like mentality from billy's boys Such a good doc though! haha steve first record breaking tape with his kid in the background was a funny scene to "stop playing donkey kong!"

The part about that which most pissed me off was when Billy goes right up to Steve's arcade machine and Steve goes "Hi, Billy," in a very friendly manner. Then Billy and his wife totally ignore Steve and walk away, the microphone picking up Billy saying, "There are some people I don't want to spend too much time around." Such a dick!

And yeah, Steve's first video was great.

uh, yeah. What an coward. annoys me just thinking about it !! lol the doc. deffinatly worked, i hate that guy !
