It's impressive that you're willing to give out the entire range of grades - a lot of people stick almost entirely within the Bs and Cs.
I'm still enjoying reading the reviews too!
Hey, thanks, man!
Been a while since I've heard from you. I was wondering if you had fallen off the face of the planet. :-)
Ha, nope. I guess I have been a bit lax, not replying to that last e-mail of yours. Anyhoo, how's your summer going? Been anywhere interesting? Any new DVDs or CDs?
Summer's been going pretty well.
I finished my screenplay! Drop me a line so I can snatch your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.
Yeah, I've bought a boatload of CDs and DVDs considering my plans to go to the San Diego Comic-Con fell through and I've been using up all the money I had planned on spending there.
How about you?
I sent you an e-mail - check your inbox. :-)
Yep, summer's going well here too. Haven't done anything very productive, but it is summer, after all!
Wow, someone else who loved Cars
Yeah, it was great!
Huge Pixar fanboy here...well, with the exception of A Bug's Life. That one's always rubbed me the wrong way.
I remember liking "A Bug's Life"
But I was only 10 when that came out, so that might have something to do with it
Well, almost everyone else seems to like it too.
I'd like to give it another go some day.
Yes, you should if you're a Pixar fan
It seems to be on the Disney Channel occasionally, so if it's on there, I'll definitely give it another go-round.
Mate, ok well i agree that bugs life was bad, but i have to say, Cars also didn't appeal to me. in facti think i gave it an F grade. my main reasoning is, unlike other pixar movies i felt it was missing the human touch. It was about cars that could talk and lived in their own world without humans, and i couldn't connect with it, and care for the characters as much as could say, Woody from toy story or Nemo that had to deal with problems stemming from living in our world with humans. at end of cars i really wanted the camera to pan out to reveal a kid playing with a toy car set , but didn't happen :( basically i couldn't buy into it lol
Haha, don't worry, you're not alone. Cars seems to be the Pixar flick that has gotten the least esctatic notices. I admit that it's one of Pixar's lesser flicks, but to me a lesser Pixar flick is like a lesser Beatles album; it still rocks my socks. Then again, I am a pretty huge fanboy.
In fact, I'm going to be watching A Bug's Life again soon in hopes of re-evaluating it...
In any case, you should be relieved to hear that Ratatouille is all about the relationship between a man and a rat. ;-)
...But not icky like I made it sound.
yes, thats a good analogy with beatles albums, but still my hate for cars...i can't say it was a lesser beatles album :) i just can't do it !!
haha for a second i thought pixar might have gone REALLY REALLY dark with Ratatouille :)
well i'm hyped ofr it now
Looking through your scores, I seem to be either in total agreement or complete disagreement with you. It's great to see someone else who loved Babel; I could never find anyone else online who thought the film was even worth pissing on. Ditto Flags of Our Fathers and Marie Antoniette. But I might give An Inconvenient Truth a "D" on a good day. And I may be the only person I know who really enjoyed Underworld: Evolution.
Have you seen Borat more than one? My second viewing seriously reduced my original glowing score. With no surprises ahead, the film takes a massive hit. And I still need to see Inland Empire.
I've seen Borat about four times, actually, and I never thought it lost its funny.
I of course thought Inland Empire was absolutely brilliant, but I know some of my friends who usually are like-minded didn't see what I was fussing about, so watch with caution. ;-)
And, yeah, Babel...why the hell does that movie get so much flak on the Interwebs?
Perhaps my cooling to Borat was based on my love of the TV series. Reviewing a few episodes of Da Ali G Show, I realized that most of the Borat skits there were funnier than the ones in the film. I still think it's an excellent movie, but not the masterpiece I first did.
I love Blue Velvet, but it's the only Lynch flick I've seen. I know it's a lame thing to do, but I often tend to balk at movies with 3 hour running times, because if you don't like it, you're in for a long 3 hours.
I never understood why Babel got the somewhat hostile reception it did from the web. I was totally dazzled by it, and left the theater certain that I'd go online and just about everyone would be gushing. Instead, pretty much every blog I read was lukewarm to it at best. For a moment I felt a little vindicated when Roger Ebert put it in as one of his Great Movies, but before that he did Pan's Labyrinth, which I hated, and he also gives 4 stars to pretty much everything these days. Oh well.
I agree, Da Ali G Show is definitely better than Borat. That show is insanely hilarious; at least the U.S. version on HBO is, I've never had the fortune of seeing the UK version.
I too occasionally balk at long running times, but Inland Empire is one of those movies where I didn't feel the enormity of those three hours at all.
I love Ebert. I agree with you that Pan's Labyrinth is way overrated, but I still liked it.
hmmm i watched Sixth Sense & Signs yesterday (both rewatches) and i was interested in your opinion of M. Night's films, i gathered these ratings
6th sense = A
Signs = A+
Unbreakable = B+
The Village = D
Lady In The Water = C-
I personally didn't like signs that much on first viewing, some of plot stuff, and felt a bit corny, almost TV Movie-esque to me at times. However i was really into it this time, it does deliver big shocks in a simple fashion, which is great to see, when compared to the gore-porn we see today. For instance i'm a big fan of The Innocents from the 60s, a great film and truely scary. So what in your opinion made signs his best film? I'm still with sense though
The Village i saw at cinema but it was a long time ago, i need a rewatch, Unbreakable, i would agree and go with B+. Lady in The Water , yet to watch.
I just think that Signs is the perfect Shyamalan movie: There's thrills, there's twists, there's emotion, a genuine sense of revelation, and it just all comes together beautifully. It's pretty much everything he's ever tried to do, and he pulls it off.
I kind of think he shot his load on that one, though, because The Village was an utterly predictable train wreck, Lady in the Water was beautiful but hollow, and The Happening ain't lookin' too good either.
Lady in the Water is the only one of his I haven't seen in theaters, but Happening might be the second.
hey mate
hmmm i have just rented Rescue Dawn from blockbuster, gonna watch it saturday night, i was wondering your thoughts on it ? A-, so its pretty good right?
cheers in advance dude
Yeah, it rocks, man.
Werner Herzog and Christian Bale together...you can't go wrong. Plus, Steve Zahn's performance is shocking, simply because he's been doing the same old shtick for so long that it's amazing he managed to pull off such a poignant, nuanced performance.
Watched it, i awarded it a B+ - B
I really enjoyed the action bits, and i felt the film got better once it was just Zahn & Bale on their own fighting for survival.
However, the movie confused me in many ways as to its genre. Obivously it has war elements but it was almost trying to be comedy at times. I also rarely thought bale's character especially acted like he was taking much of this very serously, very confident and layed back when facing all this terrible stuff. It was bit like dropping top gun / tom cruise into a war. However i really enjoyed the latter half of the film, but some attempts at comedy (even some fart jokes) seemed odd to me. Plus the ending was very mainstream and over-happy. However Zahn, did a FANTASTIC job here. I'm a fan of his comedic work too (lol sorry - i know your not :) but he really did a brilliant job here with a serious role. I'm just a little confused by those elements i mentioned, do you agree or notice any of the things i mentioned? I'd probably edge towards a B rather than B+ but i'll stick with both untill a rewatch
Hmm. I didn't really notice anything about the comedy, but I do agree that the ending went a little Hollywood.
I've actually always liked Steve Zahn, just not the actual movies he's been in. ;-)
Well, Joyride was good.
Both of you should check out Richard Linklater's subUrbia, the one flick where Steve Zahn acting like a douche actually works.
I definitely want to see it.
ah right, by comedy i didn't mean like all out laugh out loud, more, just a fairly light hearted approach but i was tired so i may of read the movie wrong ! :)
ah sorry, i assumed you didn't like him, sorry to mis-quote you.
hehe Joy ride was VERY good in my eyes :)
I was obsessed with that movie when it first came out on video.
