Shows Seen 2010 (Ranked)

  1. Acid Mothers Temple (Johnny Brenda's, Philadelphia, 4/9/10) -- superb, masterful playing by all; with a Beefheartian bass clarinet in two songs; a rendition of "The End" (that's right, that Doors tune) as the interlude of the wondrous "Pink Lady Lemonade" in which true Hendrix spirit was achieved by the lead guitarist (in both guitar flourishes and rock star moves). All throughout, Gong-esque space effects on the Roland. I doubt I'll see a more perfect show all year.

  2. Feelies -- this might be a legitimate tie with Acid Mothers. Covers galore ("What Goes On", "Sunday Morning", "Barstool Blues", "She Said, She Said", even "Outdoor Miner"!!!). Four encores!!! They loved us, we loved them even more. All around, wonderful. I loved everything I knew and didn't know. And I met a girl.

  3. Residents

  4. Art Ensemble of Chicago

  5. Mission of Burma

  6. Xiu Xiu -- I do not like mopey, gloomy, emo music, no matter how (kinda) experimental.
