I fear he is becoming the new Scaruffi.
If we start dismissing Welles because of him I'm denying you all of my Listology presence, and what a tragedy that would be.
Just don't delete your content. :-)
I've seen all of Welles' films, in fact he used to be my favourite director. I've probably watched his movies more than 10 times each. My dismissal of him has less to do with Carney and more with coming in contact with profoundly original and emotional works of art, which Welles can't even touch. I made this discovery on my own, granted with the help of Carney's website, but it was a gradual feeling that took it's course to evolve. If you want to keep praising cloyingly sentimental drivel that's fine with me, but personally I'd rather watch only the most original and sincere works (which Carney's site provides ten-fold). I'm just saying that I know Welles, I've been there, I've traversed his landscapes; and I'm moving onto more interesting, personal directors. No offense to you - you got your likes, I got mine. Just don't bother telling me Welles is the greatest, okay? I've been there.
-- what I will say in a few months time, after the conversion.
Thank god Carney doesn't subscribe to the ridiculous "emotion is all that matters in art" belief. Hopefully he'll help override Scaruffi's brainwashing.
Oh yeah; and don't forget to throw in more thinly veiled condescension when that statement becomes true in a few months, Elston.
Hehe. You always hate the ones you love. It'll be interesting in a year when I violently seperate myself from Carney's teachings.
Is it okay if I dismissed Welles BEFORE finding Carney?
(Although honestly I've only seen Citizen Kane which just got from me "this is not the best movie why does everyone clamor to this?"-- still gotta watch a ton more to make a proper decision)
Dismissing Welles is never okay; Farber was wrong and so are you =).
In any case, Citizen Kane isn't the greatest movie of all time, or Welles best for that matter. It's just so easy to roll with because it might as well be the most important film ever made.
As I said, I haven't seen enough to actually dismiss him; I was just being smarmy.
So...
WHAT SHOULD I WATCH NEXT?!
I have been thinking F For Fake or The Magnificent Ambersons...
I like The Magnificent Ambersons more, but for some reason I think F for Fake may be up your alley. It's formally fascinating.
By the way, I enjoyed the Cremaster 1 & 2 quite a bit, but haven't gotten around to the rest yet. Hopefully this week. But good call thus-far in any case.
My list is already too long. I think the deciding factor here will be WHICHEVER DOWNLOADS FASTEST.
I'm glad you're digging Cremaster so far though! It's a bit daunting to sit though. Watching them in 3-5 sittings is probably the best plan.
F For Fake is amazing, almost like post-cinema. In between innovating mockumentary and coming up with cool editing tricks, he ponders about the meaning of life and how art is not permanent.
I love that Bill Hicks Live is on the list.
[M]aybe YOUR HOMESPUN, MIDDLE-AMERICA CATEGORIES, YOUR BOURGEOIS MORALITY, YOUR NEED TO FIND SOMEONE TO LOVE is the problem
Carney's the best!
Here, you might be interested in this, all Carney films w/ director and year in a spreadsheet (hope you have Excel). Still have to do those Viewing Recommendations, not sure if I will bother!
Did you take the time to do that? Thanks!
Indeed I did, to use on my film lists. I posted here because I've so often come to here to see what Carney dug, and thought others might find it useful as well. The pleasure (or should I say busy-work) is all mine!
