Updated 6/1/10: added 2009 list and "best of 2000s" list

There are some repeat directors on here who must be favorites, no matter what they do; I think Brian De Palma's made some strong films, but Snake Eyes, one of the ten best? Same thing with Clint Eastwood; he's a talented director, but...Space Cowboys, one of the ten best? Just a couple of examples...

* = also on best of 1990s list (David Lynch's Twin Peaks also made that list, though it did not appear on the yearly lists.)
** = also on best of 2000s list (Gus Van Sant's Elephant, Abdellatif Kechiche's The Secret of the Grain, and Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds also made the list, though they did not appear on the yearly lists.)
