A Sound of Thud?

The new Peter Hyams movie A Sound of Thunder , based on the well-liked short story by Ray Bradbury , is being widely ridiculed by reviewers. For example.

I may just need to see this, this is not the first time I've been turned onto a movie by reading a negative review but... 50's type b-movie sci fi... whats wrong with that? most sci-fi's now suck anyhow... and what was wrong with 'back to the future', 'time bandits', and 'jurassic park'... I'd take a sci fi movie compared to those three than crap like 'pitch black' and 'the matrix', both of which this asshole loves to death.

I saw the trailer and it doesn't look that bad, and considering it was obviously marketed as a movie I would I hate(your average 2005 sci-fi movie), thats not bad at all. also if you read Ebert's review it sounds like he loved it when you read the review, but couldn't recomend it for some reason.

The negative reviews probably won't stop me seeing it either, so we agree there. I must say, though, that I hold Pitch Black and The Matrix in slightly higher regard than 'crap'. But to get back to the point, maybe Hyams deliberately made the style of the movie retro - out of its time - so it would be closer in spirit to the story, which dates from 1952, and its author, who dates from 1920. See also this very interesting review at Andy's Anachronisms .

judging from eberts review the retro style is not only intentional, but done very very well... if that's your thing... which it is, my thing.

We read the short story in my english class, and the teacher (who is very cool, btw) showed us the trailer. Looks like a total rip off of the book, which was boring to start with. I hope they do a better job with the movie and make it actually interesting.
