Shi Mian Mai Fu Won't Land in Miramax Limbo

Zhang Yimou's martial arts epic follow-up to Hero (still unreleased by Miramax) will be distributed by Columbia, probably under the Sony Pictures Classics label (same deal as Crouching Tiger). I'm going to stop typing now and dance a little jig of joy.

What is it that Miramax has against this film?! I just don't understand it anymore. They got an Oscar nomination, it's got great word of mouth, what is stopping them?

Basically, Harvey Weinstein and Miramax suck, and there's no disentangling the two (appeal to Disney/Miramax for the respectful treatment of Asian films, Weinstein-ism of the week #1, Weinstein-ism of the week #2, Weinstein-ism of the week #3, Weinstein-ism of the week #4. As for why the nicknames MiramAXE and Harvey Scissorhands exist, consider this question and response from 10 Questions for Harvey Weinstein:

You've often taken a strong hand in the editing of films you've released. Do you interfere for good reason?

It's not that I ever want to take the integrity out of movies; it's that I want to put the integrity into them. I've seen directors and producers want to keep stuff in that's dull and boring and pretentious. Everybody thinks, "Oh, my God, the five-hour cut must be incredible!" But the five-hour cut is usually like The Picture of Dorian Gray: it should be sitting in someone's attic and never seen.

In short, if Harvey thinks its dull, Harvey cuts it. This from the guy who wants a happy boat (I refer you again to Weinstein-ism #3 for more on his slash-happy ways).

As for why he won't release Hero, I have no idea. I believe I've read he doesn't think it'll find an audience. This begs the question as to why Miramax bought the rights in the first place, but this is SOP for Miramax. Buy the rights to a ton of Asian films, then either sit on them forever, or release them chopped, mangled, dubbed, and re-scored. The particularly sad thing about Hero is that most everybody who wants to see the movie has seen it on region-3 or region-free DVD already. So when it comes out and does poorly Harv will be able to say "See?! No audience!"

This letter, which was linked from Weinstein-ism #1, does a lot to explain the bizarre DVD marketing of "Blue" that I wrote about in my review. In fact, I'm surprised Harvey didn't cut "Blue" - but according to the IMDB, it only has one runtime, so he couldn't have cut it. I'm sure Harvey would have found it highly dull and boring and pretentious.

Wow, that is great news! Sony Classics has a pretty good track record with these kinds of releases, as far as I know.

Now if only Miramax will give us an uncut Hero before 2010...

Shalom, y'all!
