Goodbye, Robert Wise.
Not only did he direct several fine flicks, he edited Citizen Kane, a film that will long outlive everybody who claims it is over-rated.

I saw The Haunting for the first time a few months ago, and I loved it. I also like The Sound of Music (color me a sentimentalist), and I can't imagine two movies from one director in a few years' time that could be more different in everything from tone to cinematography. I didn't know about Citizen Kane, but it makes me respect Wise all the more...

although i'm not a fan of the sound of music(color me a cynic), that is a very good point... add in the sand pebbles, done just a year later and you really have something... despite my opinion on the films, anyone who can make 3 films that are widely regarded as one of the best musicals, war films, and horror films all in 4 years surely must be a master.
The man certainly lacked no flexibility, at least artistically.
I really should see The Sound of Music again. I think I was five the last time I saw it...
Shalom, y'all!

It's really sad that we see another distinguished persona leave us. Rest in heavenly peace Robert E. Wise.
A fine filmmaker.
I got him on my list of essential directors.
My personal favorite is The Set-Up.
I looooove Robert Wise - he's one of my favorites. The news of his death made me really sad, even if he's had a long, productive life. I think I'll rewatch The Day The Earth Stood Still again this weekend for the 25th time to thank him for all the good movie moments he gave us.
Think I'll give The Day The Earth Stood Still a spin tonight. RIP Mr. Wise, between Kane and Klaatu and WSS, you were there for some of my favorite movies.

lbangs, I'm not sorry, now, that you beat me to this news. If had posted first I would want to repudiate the disrespectful comments that have been made here. Not that I blame you for them.
Come on people! Call yourselves cinema enthusiasts, do you? The man deserves more respect.
I posted this list just a few weeks ago. I had only then come to realise what an important director Wise was. I honor his work and his memory.
Wise was incredibly talented and versatile, a fact your list shows off nicely.
Shalom, y'all!

Wow, what a great single-sentence obit, and without resorting to creative punctuation to string it out unnaturally. Nice.
Thanks!

BTW, Jim, is there any way to prevent specific users from commenting on one's lists?
Thanks!

I'll e-mail you...
I don't give a d*ck about Citizen Kane.
Is that "dick" or "duck"?
I was wondering what word that was meant to be myself... which is why I used the 'creative punctuation', since most of you know I don't usually show that much courtesy.
I, for one, greatly appreciate it when you watch your dump trucking mouth.
Actually, Dan, it's a Rorschach test. Could be "deck" or "dock," or even "dacka." (I'm not always the best speller, as you well know.)
I'm going to say "dump truck."
I give a d*ck about citizen kane, but not as big a d*ck as most, i do think it's overrated, but only because it's considered undoubtedly the best, i just think it's a damn great movie... and i didn't know that robert wise edited it, although what very little i've seen of his films i've enjoyed... what is most sad about this whole thing is that he is remembered most for directing the sound of music, and to a lesser extent(because it has some appeal as a musical) west side story, which is actually decent... but he's made many much much better films that didn't star julie andrews... it's really a shame.
