Pepsi-Fu

As a kung fu fan, I would be remiss if I didn't send you over to watch this commercial.

Ha! Can I assume I have now seen the best part of Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, and can happily scratch the movie off my "to see if I'm feeling particularly daring/insane" list?

Dare to dream and scratch whatever you like, it doesn't get any funnier than that.

Pepsi: The Wu generation.

Geico (Wuxia) and Adidas (WWC Wake-up Call ) have also done good, derivative work. .

Have you ever visited 'boards's commercial pages? They have some great examples of excellent spots. Some of them seem much like a conversation on listology. Some don't.

Clips range from the iconic to the unforgettable and from the ridiculous to the sublime, with PSAs and an evil effort by Robert Altman. Finally there is a vision of a Utopian Broadband World, created by Grayson Matthews. For a larger version you must have broadband. [Grayson Matthews has an excellent in house promo (WATCH OUT! dirty words.)]

Commercials, the art of our age.

"The first rule of nerd club is..."

And I love, love that Gatorade commericial. Following the Jordan tangent, I think Nike should sell a DVD containing all their commercials.

Great stuff, thanks!

Sometimes I dream, that he is me.... Nike should sell all of their commercials on DVD. I'd buy them... it'd be part of my plan for world domination. I still cry at "If you let me play..." by Wieden & Kennedy who always take it up strong. Jordan-the endorser has been almost as impressive as Jordan himself.

To bring the circle back to Gatorade the "Thank you Mia" spot is heart warming. Do you recall when the ninety second Michael Jordan ad for Gatorade first aired? It was widely panned by the so-called experts. ("Nobody calls him 'Mike'!") But it was a brilliant way to seperate his Gatorade ads from melting into a Nike ad in the minds of the viewers. Even if it was for only thirty seconds in Asia.

It was a command, wrapped in an analogy, coated with a command:
Like Mike. If I could be like Mike.

Oh yes, oh yes, I meant "all Nike commericials", not just "all Nike/Jordan commericals."

Exactly. Just think of all of the original "long version" Nike commercials that had running times from sixty seconds to three or more minutes which were then chopped up, trimmed down and remixed into thirty second versions. The Nike DVDs could enable people to group together ads from a particular sport, all the work from a specific director (Gilliam beats Lee in quality, not quantity), how a certain endorser/athelete evolved in their spots, event-linked promos (World Cup, Olympics, Super Bowl, etc) or simply watch chronologically.... Original spots, remixed edits, derivative campaigns and parody... (s)woosh, it takes my breath away just to think about it.

I asked Nike. Here was the crux of my message:

Is there any chance Nike would consider selling DVDs of their commercials? Note that I'm not interested in downloading them, nor in buying them piecemeal from a third-party vendor (both of which are addressed in your FAQ). What I'm interested in is a more comprehensive collection on DVD.

Their response was disappointing, but expected. Even though I explicitly mentioned the FAQ, they cut-and-pasted it (italicized portion) to me anyway:

Thank you for contacting Nike.

The only available information regarding purchasing Nike commercials is below:

To view the latest Nike ads, please visit one of the following Nike websites: Nikebasketball.com, Nikefootball.com, or Nikegolf.com. In case you are interested, Video Monitoring Services (VMS) sells copies of Nike television commercials. They can be reached at (323) 993-0111.

Doh!

Because I love you.

:-) That'll tide me over for a bit until Nike finally releases the complete set.

Who knows what the future/Nike has in store?

Nice! Thanks.

Oof dah! I really should remember to breathe when I type. The last two lines meant to read:
" It was a command, wrapped in an analogy, coated with an aspiration:
Like Mike. If I could be like Mike."

First of all that was very cool. Secondly how come front page messages say "Posts: 1" when there haven't been any comments yet?

Fixed, thanks for calling it to my attention. Of course, there was block of code in there causing the problem, and I definitely intentionally put this code there sometime in the past, but I have no idea why. I've probably just broken some infrequently occurring condition, so this'll bite me later.

Good question! I'll look into it.
