Masterpiece to Bomb in Two Movies

The Whine Colored Sea issues a challenge:

Earlier today, my friend Morgan asked me to name—off the top of my head—a pair of consecutive movies that showed an enormous fall from grace for a filmmaker. That is: Film A is considered an unimpeachable masterpiece and was followed by an utterly disasterous Film B.

Some good ones in the comments, although the downfall of the majority of them is the incredibly low bar to qualify for a "masterpiece". The Jeunet example of City of List Children followed up with Alien: Resurrection is one I like though.

i guess spielberg's could go anywhere depending on your opinion, but my spot would be raiders of the lost ark followed by ET

lumet's serpico followed by lovin' molly
peckinpah's cross of iron followed by convoy
de palma gets a double dose with casualties of war/bonfire of the vanities and carlito's way/mission impossible

and i do consider all but the spielberg one to be an actual masterpiece to start off.

That's easy:
the Dread Spielberg: Close Encounters of the Third Kind to 1941
or
Michael Cimino: The Deer Hunter to Heaven's Gate

plus:
Richard Attenborough: Gandhi to A Chorus Line
Francis Ford Coppola: Apocalypse Now to One from the Heart
Kevin Costner: Dances with Wolves to The Postman
Stanley Kubrick: Full Metal Jacket to Eyes Wide Shut
Roman Pola?ski: Tess to Pirates

and personal favourite:
Mike Nichols: Carnal Knowledge to The Day of the Dolphin

Wow, nice job!
