Listology Maintenance

Tags:

I just made a pile of architectural changes to Listology. No new features, boringly enough, but I did code some updates that should make it easier for me to bring new sites online based on the Listology infrastructure (I want to move my quotes list to it's own site, and I want to start a fitness site, for starters). Let me know if you notice any problems with Listology. Thanks!

Everything is alrighty now jim. I wanted to make a couple of suggestions at listology, if you don't mind...

Sure, lay 'em on me.

I've been around here for like only 4 odd months or so, and it took me a hell lotta time to understand the formatting, esp. the bold, italics and headlines. I suggest you make the tutorial more accessible, like when the time the member joins. And the Headline tutorial isnt there at all. I had to look up the source of the page (ouch..) and figure out the stuff :S. And there isnt any help either for non-html users.

There should be some way to 'filter' the non-users in the members directory. And some way to highlight the newly joined members, apart from the Rising Stars section of course.

And, the most eager of all suggestions... I think there should be a way by which individual users can contact each others, even those who dont have the email link on their name... something like what hi5 has.

Do let me know what you think of the suggestions :)
Btw, if there was ever an online poll for the site you are most passionate about, I'd vote for Listology. 1000 times over :) Great job!

Glad you dig Listology, and it's nice to have you here!

I will definitely write a formatting guide. That is overdue (along with so many other things).

What do you mean "non-users"? I think everybody in the directory has contributed at least one list (which is why, ironically, 0dysseus doesn't appear).

As for users contacting each other, can't you just post on somebody's list, if they don't have an e-mail address? I'm afraid Hi5's tour didn't really give me a good overview of how it works.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I mean 'non users' as in people who have been unactive for a long time, maybe a year or more. What I was suggesting was that maybe you could 'gray' them out and highlight the active users only.

Hear, hear! The only way I found out about headings (which was embarrassingly recent) was by cloning one of Jim's lists. Some instructions for the less sophisticated of us, please!

Is that quotes list link supposed to be up and running yet? Because I just get an error message when I try to go to it.

That link is to the old quotes list, which I recently took down. Of course, you shouldn't get such an ugly error, so that's fixed. Thanks for calling that to my attention!

I'll post a separate entry when the new site is up.

I haven't been getting the Listology Updated Content email the past few days. Could that be related to this, or is it maybe just my email?

I think it's related. Should be fixed now. If you don't mind, let me know if you don't get one tonight, thanks!

Nope, I didn't get one last night, either.

Dang. How 'bout last night? I made some more fixes yesterday that I hope did the trick. We'll get there eventually.

That did the trick! Thanks, Jim.

The recent updates is indeed broken. The small list at the bottom left corner is at least. It doesn't seem to be posting up new content. The sub categories are perfectly working though...

You mean the gold box to the left? I think that's actually working as it always has, but it caches content and only refreshes every 10 minutes. This is a perennial source of confusion.

the only list i have with image tags on it comes up 'Contains invalid markup. Make sure all tags are closed' when i try and save it, even if i don't change anything.

Yeah, this came up when I tried to update my "2005 Albums Aquired" list. As a test, I tried updating my "2005 Movies Seen" list without changing a single character and I got that same message.

Sorry fellas, Listology used to allow any old markup, and I stuck that validation in to try to keep things just a little cleaner. I realize now that's probably not going to work for existing content, so I've set it up so that everything that exists currently is grandfathered in. New content going forward will have to use valid markup. The big rule to remember is this: no unclosed tags. So a lone <br> is now no good. Instead do <br /> (that is valid shorthand for the opening and closing tag all in one). As a bonus, unclosed spoiler tags, anchor links, etc. should now be caught automatically.

Thanks, Jim. I'll correct my tags. Is there any easy way for you to make the validator work on my lists so that it prompts me to update the tags as before if they're not already when I try to make changes?

Hmm. Not easily, unfortunately. I can either grandfather all existing content, or not grandfather it. After that it gets a bit more involved.

everything is just fine with me now.

The alternate URL, http://www.biancolo.com/, linked at the bottom of each page, isn't working for me.

Fixed (removed link for now). Thanks!

The most recent updates by genre (movies : books : music : etc) seems broken, or at least I'm getting an error.

Oops, fixed. Thanks!

The Favorites page isn't coming up for me ATM, and when I tried to edit that last post I made right here, I got a Coldfusion error page. Dunno if these are temp server problems or if they relate to your recent rearchitecturing (oooh, new word!).

Looks like a file failed to transfer, thanks for the catch!

Did you know the Favorites page still isn't coming up?

Oops! Only fixed half the problem. Should be good now. Thanks!

Good new word! Now let me try and edit this and see what happens... Got the error, now it's fixed.

How exciting! I look forward to seeing these new sites.
