As if the home page weren't cluttered enough, I've gone and added another box to it. For variety's sake, I put it on the right instead of the left. The purpose is to make the site a little more welcoming to newcomers. You might have to do a SHIFT+Refresh to see the fancy dashed border and cornsilk background. As usual, comments welcome, although this is hardly an earth-shaking feature.
I dig the box. Cool idea.

Good idea to fill that dead space on the right side, but I would have set the page up with the two columns on either side matching. You could put your message on the right in the same yellow and green boxes (same font & size) or you could change your "search" and "recent updates" boxes to your new style.
Either way, I think matching the side bars may produce a more distinct line between the three columns of text. Just a thought.
Good point, and I actually deliberated over that for quite awhile. I ended up deciding I wanted it to be distinct so it stood out rather than just blending in as yet another navigation element to overwhelm the first-timer. Tough call though, and thanks for the feedback. I may change it yet.
Personally, I like having it different from the toolbar. The separate formatting and the dotted-line box do make it isolated from the other items; hopefully, more people will notice it this way.
I like it. It's not intrusive at all, and I think it will be very helpful to newcomers. I really like the background shade in the box, too. It matches the teal color very nicely.
(BTW, maybe if people really do think it makes the homepage too cluttered they'll donate to the site to get rid of the nag box, eh? :-)
