High Fidelity DVD Unavailability
[Note: It's called alliteration. First prize to the person who can tell me what I mean by that.]
First let me preface this tidbit by saying the below is only my experience and it's very possible that it just seems that the DVD gods are all aligned against me. That being said...
If you enjoy the movie High Fidelity and also enjoy the company of your DVD player (or might someday) and you think you'd like to own a copy of this film in said format I would highly recommend tracking down a copy while you still can.
I've been trying to get a copy of this film since before Christmas and have yet to succesfully do so. Many online places do not have it in stock and 2 that said they did Outpost.com and Playcentric ended up being unable to fill my order. I am currently pursuing a copy through BUY.COM. We'll see how that turns out.
I have also located an in-store copy at my local Barnes & Noble but they're asking the full retail price $32.99 and I don't know if I want to pay that just yet when BUY.COM says they can send it to me for $16. It very well might come to that but I don't want to give in quite yet.
It is very possible that Disney (I believe) will repress this DVD someday but in the meantime it might be very hard to come by. If anyone Listolog's experience is different than mine please post feedback. I want to know!

Are you sure they just didn't underestimate the demand for the disc and temporarily run out? When I checked Amazon, DVD Universe, and seveal other sites this morning, it was in stock. Perhaps just a hick-up in the flow?
I also noticed that a two-fer High Fidelity / Rushmore DVD was slated for release in November, so I don't think High Fidelity on DVD is gone for good.
Just so everybody can breathe easier.
Shalom, y'all!

Hey, L,
All of the sites I ordered from claimed that it was in stock. But eventually canceled the order when they couldn't deliver it. I got one from BUY.COM eventually.
Was Amazon one of them? They're usually pretty good to keep their stock info up to date.
Well, the good news is that that two-fer is supposed to be coming out later, so the film will be available in some form. Rather odd if they have discontinued the original one, though, don't you think?
In fact, in between typing the above and what I am typing now, I did a little research. It seems High Fidelity was a test DVD of sorts. The studio wanted to see what moolah could be generated by releasing the disc for rental-only for a period of time before lowering the price to purchase-level. This was a bit of a surprise to retailers, from what I can gather. So, I'm guessing most sites decided not to load up on the expensive discs, but to wait until the price drop happened. That may be why the disc suddenly became "unavailable" from most online retailers for awhile. I've found at least several people who have received the disc from Amazon fairly recently.
There were also some problems with the disc not playing on certain players, so the disc could have been temporarily recalled to correct the problem.
Does that help?
Shalom, y'all!

Just so you know, you can get a copy for $.49 if you join columbia house's dvd club.
Also, if you don't mind buying used, you might try secondspin.com, which is where I plan to get rid of all my VHS tapes and obtain the DVDs.
If you can't get High Fidelity any other way, consider Critics Choice Video (ccvideo.com) which has it on DVD for $23.77. When Critics Choice has a free shipping sale or other promotion, the prices are quite reasonable (well, for video, anyway). Good luck!
First off, hopefully everyone knows what alliteration means, but in this specific case, "High Fidelity DVD Availability" has a lot of hard consonant sounds repeated within it, specificially with the double "ity". Now I demand my prize.
Blah blah blah, I love High Fidelity (easily one of my top 3 favorites of the year), though I'm fine with getting it on Ebay, as it's common to find there. I don't know what you think of that, but a copy recently went unsold for $9.99, and the closed auctions end from $12 to $18. Just do a search for: "high fidelity" dvd and the goods (literally) should pop up.
Other than that, I don't own a DVD player yet, though I've been a huge proponent of DVDs since before the general public had heard of the darn things--you can blame lower-middle class status on that. For the most part, I'd rather own 50 used movies than 10 new movies, with a few exceptions on things I'd like to collect as new.
Phreak! Thanks for the heads up. I can't believe I forgot to try the eBay route. I'll see if my BUY.COM order goes through and move to eBay next. Thanks!
