From a fortuitous e-mail that I got from YesAsia.com I've discovered that, as of February 22nd and March 21st, respectively, they are carrying the new Zhang Yimou film, Hero (2002), in both VCD ($8.99 + Free Shipping) and Region 3 DVD ($15.99 + Free Shipping) format . In addition they pointed out the official Hero web site which has 2 trailers!
I don't have a regionless DVD player but my DVD player does play VCDs, which I verified when I bought the Battle Royale (2000) VCD a few months back. I'll be ordering the VCD today! I can't believe those incredible prices!
Well, something's going on. YesAsia is no longer selling the Hero VCD or DVD as far as I can tell. If you come across it somewhere else in either VCD or Region 1 DVD please let me know.
Excellent! Thanks for posting this! Now I just have to figure out if my DVD player is hackable. I wish YesAsia would put the running time down, as I want to make sure I get the extended cut rather than the 98-minute MiramAxe hack job.
I'm 99% sure that it's Zhang Yimou's original uncut version.
Unfortunately, I'm still hung up on that 1% chance. I did some poking around and KKFlix is selling what appears to be the same 2-disc Hong Kong version, and they list the running time as 98 minutes.
Jim, did you notice that HKFlix.com has an All Regions DVD of Hero? I ordered it last night since YesAsia has pulled all of their copies. Figured I should get while the getting is good.
Thanks for the heads-up! Now I find myself on the horns of a dilemma. Buy now and *don't* have my first experience with the movie be the perhaps-mythical director's cut, or wait and probably miss the boat entirely. I do believe Miramax cracks down on hard on infrigements of their distribution rights. Waffle waffle...
I broke down and ordered it. I figure Mirimax will issue a cease-and-desist to HKFlix shortly, so far the "director's cut" is only a rumor, and I have no faith that Mirimax will release an unbastardized version if they ever get around to releasing it here at all.

I sure hope these All Region DVDs work as advertised. Have you ever tried one? For that matter have you ever ordered from HKFlix.com? I was hesitant to give them my credit card number so I just paid for the disc through Paypal.
I've never tried an all-region disc, and I've never ordered from HKFlix before. I also didn't give them my CC; I paid by check. I guess we'll find out!
Jim, I got my Hero DVD last night. I watched it. It was very good. More news at 11.
Argh! You are such a TEASE! :-) I'm really looking forward to your review, and I'm psyched the thing actually played on your player. I can't wait for mine to come, but since I paid by check and they will wait for it to clear it might be a bit.

Well, this VCD FAQ should help get you started. As far as whether your DVD player supports VCDs I guess you'd have to check the documentation. If you share your DVD Manufacturer and Model with me I might be able to do some research.
