Han Shoots First: Lucas Strikes Back

We were happy to report that the original Star Wars trilogy would see the light of day on DVD. <yoda> Premature, I was </yoda>:

Thank you, Impostor for the heads-up.

what is all this whining about anamorphic widescreen? I thought the point was it'd be the original theatrical version, so why MUST they include an anamorphic setting for special televisions... it's obsurd... if i were to ever set hands on owning a star wars dvd, it'd be these, even if it's non-anamorphic.

I'd feign surprise but this is just the latest of many examples of the Bearded Lord Lucas's profound misunderstanding and contempt for Star Wars fans. For someone obsessed with using, providing and despotically requiring the latest technological developments this is a nonsensical act. This isn't just a failure to use a "widely adopted... industry standard for presenting widescreen films" it is one step up from a VHS dub.

Perhaps the Bearded Lord Lucas is eager to return as soon as possible to making the small, independent-type films that he claims are closest to his heart. I'd be amazed and relieved if he ever made good on that threat. Remember: the first three movies were about a young, wide-eyed innocent up against an all-powerful empire... the next three (Episodes: I-III, ugh) were about a trade federation. Somebody needs to steal the plans to the Bearded Lord Lucas and fire a torpedo down his ventilation shaft.

Apparently the Bearded Lord Lucas takes the concept of F.U. money literally.

I think in the case of Lucas, you'd have to fire the torpedo *up* his ventilation shaft.

I believe the deal is that the "special televisions" will eventually become the norm, so if you're going to shell out your hard-earned dough on DVDs and don't want them to look inferior down the line, buy anamorphic.

Of course, I've lately decided to pretty much stop buying DVDs myself because I hate rebuying for each new improved format that comes down the pike. But these particular Star Wars DVDs are obsolete before they even get out the door.

Regardless, if you want to own the originals, these are the best bet. They just could have been better.
