Hacking Netflix on Widescreen vs. Yokelvision

Hacking Netflix has an open question on Widescreen vs. Yokelvision. Two Listologists have chimed in so far.

Good god, I just read the comments on "Hacking Netflix" and it appears that there are still people who prefer panned-and-scanned movies. Strange.

It's funny -- I'm about as pro-widescreen as the next guy, but I just stumbled into a situation where I've found P&S (or at least, non-widescreen) is an advantage: the new iPod with video. Since the screen is as about as big as it can be, watching ws is a bit of a pain. I'm trying to convert as many TV shows and older, 4X3 films as I can, and if I have a choice to between ws and cropped, I'm going cropped. (Interestingly, Arrested Development is only ws.)

Of course, the iPod with video is going to be current for about another 30 seconds before a real, widescreen video iPod comes out, but it's an odd place to be nonetheless.

Why would anyone pay to see a movie that's been altered significantly from its original form? Thank god this is no longer the day of pan-and-scan VHS tapes.

Amen brother.

In the year 2006, this should not even be a debate anymore. Original aspect ratio is the only way to go, period. Let's not forget that a lot of older movies were shot in a "full frame" aspect ratio, so it's not only a matter of full vs. wide. I remember one guy making a big scene in a DVD forum because he could not find a Widescreen version of Casablanca. Dude... Come on.

This debate always reminds me of one of my favorite loonies ever on the web.

Fantastic, I've never seen that before, thanks!

He was joking...right?
