Even casual fans of family games, strategy games, travel games, and similar game-ish ilk owe it to themselves to check out Gladstone's Games to Go, a fabulous resource of games that can be played with zero or minimal equipment (a few coins, or a scrap of paper and pencil). It includes a diverse selection of games, and includes home-grown approaches to many boxed classics, like Boggle and Scattergories. For $10 you can have those and other boxed games always close at hand, for a fraction of the price of their slickly packaged counterparts. Highly recommended.

How's this for cool: the author of this book somehow found this post and wrote me! Had a nice exchange with him about games and stuff, and learned from his e-mail sig that he had two bits on NPR. I'm condensing a bunch of the game descriptions for my Palm Pilot as we speak. Lots of fun to be had.
