The Gender Genie

I came across an interesting tool while surfing the blogs. Copy a block of text into The Gender Genie and it will make an informed guess on whether the author of the text is female or male. I took some large passages from some of our more esteemed listologists (whose gender I know) and it did a pretty good job. I haven't read the research paper on which it is based but it's linked to from The Gender Genie site as well.

Apparently my papers for school are masculine... I'm not sure why the words your, we, me, and myself are listed under female for nonfiction, though. I was taught, for the most part, to avoid those words in academic papers.
My more personal writings (i.e. blog, lists on Listology, etc.) indicate that I'm female, though, so it's all good.

Well, it incorrectly informed me that I was girl.

I don't know if I should be worried.

I copied and pasted your entire Movies Seen in 2003 text and it identified you as male. I copied Geek's Seen in October 2003 and it identified her as female. I think the larger the sample text, the better it does.

That makes more sense. I used an entry from my blog. Maybe I'll put some larger entries in there and see what happens.

This is a cool little toy. Thanks for pointing it out Dan.

So where is your blog, AAA? The URL you have in your Listology profile appears to be defunct.

Oh dear, my livejournal is the standard teenage stuff. I'll update my profile to link to it.

Cool beans, thanks for the link AAA. I enjoy reading weblogs of folks I know (one of these days I've got to convince the rest of my family to jump on the bandwagon). Since turnabout is fair play, feel free to e-mail me off-list if you want the location of the "friends and family" portion of my weblog. You can remind me of what its like to be a teenager, and I can horrify you with tales from the parenting trenches. :-)
