Friedkin on why the studio wanted to call the movie Doyle instead of The French Connection: "They told me they went to a shopping mall and people thought the title sounded like a foreign movie, an art film or a condom, and none of them are very good." Here's what else he had to say.

Hmm, so they considered Paul Newman for the lead. I wonder if you would've liked it better if they had picked Newman.

Perhaps for sentimental reasons, but I don't think it would have had much effect on my final verdict; while I didn't care for the movie I thought Gene Hackman was very good.
