Criterion Collection Holiday Gift Set

The ultimate Christmas gift for your favorite cinephile, and it'll only set you back $4,999 ("You save $2,501"). I hereby dub it "The Criterion Collection Collection." « via Twitch »

I've become obsessed with finding a way to get this set, and there's only one way I could come up with. You get five people each willing to kick in $1000 (that's about as high as I could manage). There's 241 films on 282 discs which works out to almost $21 per film or $18 per disc. So you each person would get roughly 50-55 films each depending on multiple disc sets and whatnot.

Now since it'd be impossible to get 5 people that would want all different movies, you'd have to have a draft like in Fantasy Football or Baseball. You make a list of the films and rank them from most-wanted to least. Then you draw for who picks first and have a round by round draft through IM or something.

Even though I think the idea could work, there's still a lot of logistical problems. One person would have to pay the whole $5000 and then get reimbursed. That person would then have to mail out 50-55 DVDs to the other 4 people.

Ah...maybe it wouldn't work. I wish I could find a way to get some of the ones on my most-wanted list through this thing and not have to pick up one here and one there. I guess this will just have to remain a pipe dream.

Ah well, it's fun to dream. I know if you buy CC disc piecemeal they are usually around $30, so this is a pretty good deal. I was thinking you could buy them all and then sell off 4/5 of them, but it would be a ton of work, and you probably couldn't quite get your cost back on at least some of them.

Too bad there aren't any used copies in the Amazon Marketplace. If they did I could probably get it for only $4975.

Ah, you don't get the out-of-print Criterion Salo...

That's it, I'm passing!

Shalom, y'all!

Here's my "Seen It" version, for anybody that wants to clone it and do the same exercise.

Someone should buy it for Reed Hastings. You know how you sometimes give other people the gift you'd like to receive yourself?

I'll be hornswoggled if I'm going to buy a big powerful CEO (worth $150M in February) a $5,000 Christmas present!
