Controversial Classics Collection

Filmbrain is giddy over May 10 (old news, I know):

As far as "new release" Tuesdays go, 10 May might very well be one of the best ever. For years, Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd has hovered near the top of Filmbrain's "needs-to-be-on-DVD" list, and the day has finally arrived where his dream becomes reality. Though available as a separate DVD, it is included as one of the discs in an outstanding box set entitled The Controversial Classics Collection -- a must-own.

He also notes that Burden of Dreams is coming out, which is great news for anybody that marvelled at the logistical and psychological nightmare the filmmakers subjected themselves to in making Fitzcarraldo.

I have seen all the movies in that collection. A wonderful grouping. The Americanization of Emily is a forgotten favorite. But I love James Garner. A face in the Crowd is just great. Andy Griffith like you never seen him before or since.

They all sound great, but A Face in the Crowd and Bad Day at Black Rock were the ones that really caught my eye.

A Face in the Crowd is pretty freakin' awesome... it also helped explain an obscure "Mr. Show" joke!

I now have Fury and Bad Day at Black Rock back-to-back in my queue. A Spencer Tracy double feature!

Bad Day at Black Rock is a great movie. Might be Spencer Tracy's best performance ever... and that is saying something.

Well then, you'll have to let me know what you think!

Always a treat to see you pop in here, Mr. JG. I'll have to take a shot at seeing all the movies in the collection. Hopefully Netflix will stock them individually.

I read about the Controversial Classics Collection several months ago and preordered it then; every film sounds intriguing. Hopefully I'll start watching this weekend!

You'll have to post some reviews! I'd definitely be curious to hear your thoughts.

I'll try!
