Cold Mountain Cringing
Miramax had one of those "look at all the great movies Miramax has made" trailers on in front of I'm Not Scared, and in it was a brief clip from Cold Mountain that knocked it off the fence for me and firmly into "I wouldn't watch it if you paid me" territory. The clip is of Renee Zellweger ranting something about standing in the rain, and I was aghast at its awfulness. It was so, so bad I had to rewind it. Twice. And call my wife in to see it. She watched, flinched, cringed, covered her eyes, and fled.
Maybe context is everything, but yow, what a clip to pull for a trailer! And speaking of context, are these really the memorable quotes? I say Oscars all around to anyone in the movie that can make that material fly.
Apologies for the totally unfair bashing of a movie I haven't seen. I blame Miramax ('cause it's so easy).

I liked the movie, it is indeed very good. Renee Zellweger was a problem in it, but once you accept that she`s an "annoying" person it`s OK. I at least made my peace with her while watching the film. And the love story between Jude Law and Nicole Kidman is really great. That`s what the film is basically about. Holding onto the only thing that really matters in this world, even in the most horrible times - and the civil war must have been gruesome...
Recommended viewing. I rated it *** / ****
Cool. I did some searching before I wrote the post above, and noted that many Listologists at least liked the movie. Your post and others really underscore the whole "what was Miramax thinking" question in regards to showing that Zellweger clip, though.
That line still makes me cringe when I hear it, and the context doesn't improve it any. You are quite right. They should pay you to watch it.
Perhaps inclusion to the "look at all the worst movies Miramax has made" will be Daltry Calhoun. Although I enjoyed seeing my current hometown up on the big screen, the movie is just achingly bad. Qualified reviewers at link.
Zero percent. Ouch. Sorry to see Elizabeth Banks in that one, as she's from around my neck of the woods.
Well, the movie would have been better had Mrs. Zelwegger not been in it. I think it's worth checking out just for the music and Jude Law's performance.
AAA! When's the last time we had direct interaction on this site? Nice to hear from you. Maybe I'll put the movie back on the fence, but that's really testament to how much I respect you, as I'm still carrying a nervous tic from that Zellweger bit. :-)
That confirms something that I've dimly felt about that movie for some time: that it's mediocre crap. Or maybe just crap.
I'd like to see you and Ebert debate movies, Jim. You have a Siskel-ean quality.
Thanks! Even if Ebert would mop the floor with me...
Oh, I think you might mop the floor with...um, logistics, no. Wouldn't work.
Just use Coldfusion metaphors to review a movie; that'll get Ebert!
