The Chronicles of Riddick

The release of Vin Diesel's new summer movie, The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), will be preceded by an animated "bridge" film (ala the Animatrix) called The Chronicles of Riddick - Dark Fury, connecting it to the previous film Pitch Black (2000). Apparently a game for the XBox, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, is in the works as well.

It's quite clear that all of this was never intended as a franchise before the first film was made but the studio is doing its darndest to convince the public otherwise.

I thought Pitch Black was great, as far as medium-budget science-fiction b-movies go, but the trailer for the 2nd film has me concerned. The movie could turn out to be great but the trailer far from engrossing is more confusing than anything. I've read quite a bit of science fiction and you'd think that the concept would pull me in but it pushes me quite far away and I'm open to almost anything. I can't imagine what John Q. Viewer is thinking.

Apparently Pitch Black 2 isn't the only summer movie with an animated prequel. I just found one called Van Helsing - The London Assignment. Weird trend.

I want to see Pitch Black 2, but at the moment my curiosity is more morbid than enthusiastic.

Did you enjoy Pitch Black?

I did, albeit with the same caveat you mentioned (I liked it "as far as medium-budget science-fiction b-movies go").
