David Byrne (and father) on the new Freedom Tower design:
This instead is a big fuck you to the rest of the world at the entrance of NY harbor, it says we are isolationist, protectionist and closed. As dad suggests it says we don’t think things will get better, we don’t believe good will triumph; instead we think things will get a lot worse. It’s back to medieval days for us.
More in the full piece.

Not a bad idea. I also liked the notion of artwork of some kind. Since whatever we do, the place is bound to be fraught with a truckload of symbolism, why not erect an abstract statue that is entirely symbolic? Sure, comedians would mock it endlessly, some would argue that it really represents America's hubris, and others would scoff that it's too avant garde and ineffectual, but at least it wouldn't exude a distinctly Orwellian chill.
I wish they had entombed the site as it was on September 12.
