Although I am having trouble getting too excited about film awards this year, the National Board of Review announced the first ones for 2004. Film of the year? Finding Neverland
Others in the top ten:
The Aviator
Closer
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways
Kinsey
Vera Drake
Ray
Collateral
Hotel Rwanda
Of course, I have to wonder where Before Sunset and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are...

I know what you mean about film awards this year. For the most part, the front-runners don't enthuse me, and I have a feeling that my favorites of them are gonna get the shaft.
I hope that Closer is good, because I need to love a frontrunner other than Sideways. Kinsey is good, but I have cooled somewhat on my love for it.
On a positive note though, this is the first year in a while that the Oscars are sorta a toss-up. None of the films are the juggernauts of previous years (i.e. Return of the King, A Beautiful Mind, and Chicago). This year may actually end up being based on critical love.
In that case, Sideways and Eternal Sunshine may end up sitting pretty...but, then again, Finding Neverland is just the sort of schmaltz they love.
MY CURRENT BEST PICTURE PREDICTIONS:
The Aviator
Finding Neverland
Kinsey
Sideways
Ray
These aren't gonna be the nominees (it's too easy and obvious to be true), but nothing else has picked up momentum yet.
Watch out for Spanglish, Closer, Phantom, and Eternal at the Golden Globes...perhaps things will change.
I am horribly dissapointed in their choice for Best Picture.
Before Sunset and Eternal Sunshine made the honorable mentions list, which honors indie films.
