Here's an interesting (albeit poorly formatted) list from Book magazine via NPR: 100 Best Characters in Fiction Since 1900. After 3 minutes of consideration, I have no problems with this list. Off the top of my head I found Jay Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, Yossarian, Kurtz, Grendel, Tom Ripley, and Tarzan. Finally came up dry with Francis Phelan of Ironweed fame. Sure, I'd like to see Skink, Dortmunder, and Batman on this list, but that's why NPR probably wouldn't touch my resume with a 10 foot pole. :-)

Okay, I discovered one problem I have with the list: Harry Potter is on it, but nobody from Lord of the Rings.
