Author Comments:

Burton is a former Disney animator who has a penchant for the weird. He makes consistently good, but not great, films that tend to have an outcast as the central figure. His animation background is easily identified in his films, and he often casts Johnny Depp. Note: He didn’t direct Nightmare, but he wrote and produced it, so it’s his baby. This is how his films rate.

I've rated the films from a zero (horrible!) to four (wonderful!) star scale, with the links going to my reviews. As usual, I've only included films I've seen.

why so hard on batman returns?

It just comes off as a little too contrived, even for a comic book adaptation. Seems like everyone is on auto-pilot and trying to get to the next project (Burton and Keaton left the series after this one). It also feels overly heavy with special effects and atmosphere without any joy behind it. An excercise in style wihtout anything at its core.
