Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Japanese Anime

This is a wonderful television series, well written with a good mix of comedy and emotion. The 6th and final DVD of this series was just released in the U.S. and I wanted to highly recommend this to everyone.

The show primarily revolves around Saga, a young girl being raised by her grandmother in a small german village. One day Saga's organized carefully planned out daily routine is disrupted when she finds a little apprentice snow fairy named Sugar. Saga befriends Sugar by giving her a waffle to eat and from that point on Sugar and Saga are inseparable. Saga is the only person in town that can see Sugar and her other fairy friends, which results in a lot of comedic situations. Through out this show Saga and Sugar help each other to grow emotionally, which seems to be primary point of the show. There is a lot of good solid emotion here. You also have Saga's rival, the local rich girl Greta. Greta is a riot.

Like the Pixar movies we all know and love, this is a perfect show for kids and adults to watch together. The first DVD is probably the cutest most diabetically sweet thing I have ever seen. The next 4 DVD's build a story filled with some mystery, comedy, and emotion. Then the final DVD takes the emotional aspects of the show up to a higher level. I have to warn you that the conclusion, although satisfying, does have a sad aspect to it. Have some kleenex ready.

There is a 7th DVD coming out in May of 2004 which revisits this story. I believe they are calling it the Sugar Summer Special. It has Saga as a 17 year old remembering back to the days when she and the season fairies were together. I am hoping they do something in here to smooth over that sad ending, but they probably won't.
