With all this talk of a woman finally winning the Best Director Oscar, I figured it was about time to make this list.

My knowledge of short films is too inadequate to include them in this list, but I imagine Meshes of the Afternoon would make it if I included shorts.

There are definitely gaps in my viewing here. I've never seen any films by Mira Nair, Claire Denis, Isabel Coixet, Leni Riefenstahl, Julie Taymor, Kimberly Peirce, or Sally Potter. Nonetheless, here is the list based on what I've seen.

And I make no apologies for loving Miranda July. :-)
