"1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"

- I didn't start this page until I was up to Wizard Of Oz, so that's why there is no comments for the first...100?
- A Trip to the Moon (1902)
- I was able to watch this movie on YouTube. Do these men have any idea of what kind of history they were making back then? And considering the first REAL trip to the moon didn't happen until 67 years later, this was a great idea. The imagination of this director is amazing for being the first moving picture. This movie gives about as much information about the moon then, as we have now. The art, acting, and creativity are beautiful. I hope this film is never forgotten... (7.5)
- The Great Train Robbery (1903)
- The Birth of a Nation (1915)
- Wow. This movie is so amazing. Just how elaborate it is, and detailed. The portayal of human beings so long ago. It's amazing that the director was able to create something so controversial for its time and still be such a Mark of history all the way through to today. The relationship he showed between the 2 families on opposing sides and what these people during that time had to endure, both the blacks and the whites. It's interesting how the Ku Klux Klan was portrayed as the savior for the South instead of just a racist group out to extinguish the blacks. And the whole making of the film, the length of the production, the amount of money it required, the theatrical acting, and of course seeing the fashion of the times. What a milestone in the world of cinema. (8.2)

- The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
- Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
- Olympia (1938)
- The Baker's Wife (1938)
- Bringing Up Baby (1938)
- This movie was okay, but it was more annoying than classic. (4)
- Stagecoach (1939)
- The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums (1939)
- Babes in Arms (1939)
- Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
- The Wizard of Oz (1939)
- I haven't seen this movie since I was very young and it is so much more fascinating now. The people back then must have been so taken aback. Like nothing they've ever seen before. (8.5)
- Destry Rides Again (1939)
- Only Angels Have Wings (1939)
- Gone With the Wind (1939)
- I cannot believe how disappointed I was with this movie. Not to mention that it is WAAAAY too long. Clarke Gable was fantastic, but I could have totally done without the whining stuck-up b***h, who the whole movie is based around. Scarlet O'hara. I'm being generous by rating this movie a (3)
- Daybreak (1939)
- Gunga Din (1939)
- This was very good. It's kind of a cowboys and indians type of movie. Except the cowboys are british (or Scottish. I'm not sure what the ending is about.) and the indians are from India. The comedy came through very well, there's a good lesson to learn, well, actually, maybe a couple, and the scenery is amazing. I live in Colorado Springs, practically right next to Pikes Peak, and it looks like the movie was shot right here, in my own backyard. It makes me think about what this town looked like before the settlers, when it was just plains and flatness. I can't wait to watch it again. I give this movie a (9.3)
- Ninotchka (1939)
- The Rules of the Game (1939)
- This movie was good, but very chaotic. All kinds of adultery going on in this movie. Almost too much...got kind of confusing at times.. I rate this an (8)
- Wuthering Heights (1939)
- His Girl Friday (1940)
- You know what I don't understand about this movie? The girl's name isn't Friday. LOL Pretty interesting. Good ending. Feel bad for the other fellow though. And his mother, for that matter. I give this a (7)
- Rebecca (1940)
- I thought this movie was great. Suspenseful, curious, and keeps you involved through the whole movie. I never saw it coming. And the ending is wonderful. Seems like it would have been conterversial for the time, because of what happens in the end. Everything went exact how I felt it should have. I give this a (9.5)
- Fantasia (1940)
- The Philadelphia Story (1940)
- The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
- This movie was also very good. I'm glad that there is a happy ending to it. Well, sort of. It was really sad to see what these people had gone through though. This seems to be one of the first western movies. I would not call this a western, but it definately has that feel coming over it. I give this movie a (9)
- Dance, Girl, Dance (1940)
- Pinocchio (1940)
- Who can say anything bad about Pinocchio? Only Disney's 2nd film, and it took over 2 years and 200 artists to finish. Great animation, great lessons to be learned, great songs that still get remembered by children today. There were some scenes that I could have swore were in the movie that I never saw, but that could just be my own illusional self. Definately a timeless film that will not be forgotten. Thanks Disney! (8)
- The Mortal Storm (1940)
- The Bank Dick (1940)
- Very cute movie. I've never seen W.C. Fields on the screen before, but heard lots about him. He's right up there with Chaplin and Keaton. Very funny. The comedy was smooth and well acted. And the car chase! Not only amazing for it's time, but very well thought out. And the main character, Mr. Souse, being the hero in the end. It's just an awsome movie. I give this a (9.5)
- Citizen Kane (1941)
- I watched this movie a couple years ago, and I thought it was okay, but I didn't see why it was #1. Now that I've seen all these other movies leading up to this one, I have a MUCH better appreciation for it. But I am only 22, and in this day in age, most people my age don't even know what Citizen Kane is. I agree that this movie is great, that it's a huge staple in the motion picture business, but the majority of the people these days don't have the kind of appreciation necessary to make this #1. I rate this movie a (9) but I think the title of "Greatest Film Of All Time" needs to be re-evaluated.
- The Lady Eve (1941)
- The Wolf Man (1941)
- This movie actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It was a little cheesy, but it was more along the lines of Frankenstein and such. The acting was decent, and it almost felt believeable. I give this a (6)
- The Maltese Falcon (1941)
- Sergeant York (1941)
- Dumbo (1941)
- Oh, this movie was so much better than I remembered. It's really short though. Only an hour. But the colors, and the animation. Everything is just fantastic. (9)
- High Sierra (1941)
- This movie was very good. After all, my favorite movies are gangster movies. And boy, was this a gangster movie! I'd never seen a movie with Bogart before. What a swell actor he is huh? The ending was sad, but inevitable, I guess. Funny how such a hard guy could fall so hard for the other girl. (10)
- Sullivan's Travels (1941)
- How Green Was My Valley (1941)
- The Palm Beach Story (1942)
- Now, Voyager (1942)
- What a love story!!
- Casablanca (1942)
- This movie was so good. What great actors! It was so smooth, and of course those unforgettable lines, "here's looking at you kid" and "all the gin joints, in all the cities, in all the world, why'd she have to walk into mine?" What a classic. The music was fantastic. I'd love to get a soundtrack. And the direction of the whole thing was amzing. (10)
- To Be or Not to Be (1942)
- Cat People (1942)
- The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
- Another spoiled rich kid in the movies! Why did people like this type of person so much? It was a really good movie. And it was really bad about the ending being destroyed. Poor Orson Welles had to put up with so much crap. LOL I can tell that the ending didn't quite flow with the rest of the film. So I rate this a (6.5)
