Author Comments:
Movies in order of preference

For your "To See" list for David Lean, I would highly recommend Brief Encounter.
Thx. Added! :-)
What I woud suggest in your "to see" lists:
Tim Burton, Beetlejuice
David Lynch, Dune - Fire Walk With Me (and if possible, both TV seasons of Twin peaks) - Lost Highway - Wild at Heart
George Lucas, obviously episodes 5 and 6, comment ça se fait qu'ils soient pas dans ta liste?
Brian De Palma, Carrie - Phantom of Paradise
John Carpenter, see my list
and finally, you should try, when you have time, to see some of these and some of these
Thank you
Thanks very much!
Burton: Oops. Actually, I've seen Beetlejuice. I only forgot it. Thx.
Lynch: I intentionally left out Dune. It is not worthy of Lynch. Wild at Heart and Lost Highway are indeed two films I'll add.
Lucas- Désolé, mais Episode V fut réalisé par Irvin Kershner et Episode VI par Richard Marquand. Lucas n'a fait que le premier volet de la première trilogie :-)
De Palma- Fair enough. I taped Carrie on Sunday, but I have not yet had enough time to watch it
Carpenter: OK, I have only seen 5 of these. I'll have a look at the others asap.
Cronenberg and Hartley: Ouch. In fact, I have never seen any of their films. I'm really curious about Naked Lunch (but I plan to read the book first) and Amateur (--> L. Bangs)...
Thanks very much once more.
I disagree about Dune... I know Lynch himself complained a lot about his work and his work conditions with DeLaurentiis and the italian crew but the fact remains that the movie serves the mythology of the books in the best way possible for a two-hour movie... I don't believe the problem with Dune was Lynch, or the cast (which I find excellent) but more the fact that it was just as stupid in 1984 to try and adapt Dune to the big screen as it would have been if they had tried to adapt The Lord of the Rings in those years...
What I try to express is that if you accept the idea that this project was doomed from the start then really it comes out quite ok and yes, I will admit it, I like this movie, I like it for all its flaws and for all its strenghths even if there are many more of the former...
OK, I admit: I have not read the book (and frankly, I don't even plan to read it, in the near future). I guess you see the film from totally another point if you have read the book.
Yee-haw (via Bo & Luke)!
Prepare for Amateur to disappoint you; it seems to let many down. However, if you like it, you might get hooked.
Wow, two warnings, and it is my favorite film!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Thx for the warning(s). As soon as I get the possibility, I'll watch it and let you know whether I liked it or not.
And FF Coppola is not included in your list of directors... why ?
Ah, thanks. I had totally forgotten him.
No Federico Fellini?
Touché! I have got La Strada and La Dolce Vita on DVD, but I haven't yet come round to watch them. Then I missed I vitelloni and Il bidone on TV. I'm also looking forward to Otto e mezzo...
Don't miss 8½ (Otto e mezzo)!
You only gave a 5 to Carrie ? Why oh why ?
Actually I expected quite a lot, and what I finally got was rather unsatisfying. I mean, there is nothing really great (and not even good) in that movie: the acting (except Sissy Spacek), the writing, the direction, no. Another problem is that the film is at the beginning way too slow, and than everything happens too fast. As I haven't read the book (in fact, after having seen the film, I no longer plan to), I cannot base my judgment on a book/film comparison, but what I can say is that this film was really boring and last, but not least, disappointing!
Well, I disagree on every account... and once again, you probably should blame yourself for watching the movie with high expectations, you can never win if you start watching a movie expecting it to be good because afterwards you will tend to focus on the flaws and not look at the overall quality of the movie... not saying you do that personally, it's just a fact that having high expectations about a movie you have never seen is putting yourself halway on the road to major disappointment if the movie is good but not as good as you expected... oh, well, you get my point... I like Carrie for most of the reasons you gave... the acting is a bit dodgy, well, isn't that the best way to give the movie its flavour of realism ? As if real clumsy puberty-shaken teenagers were actually playing the parts of self-conscious cruel cheerleaders/victims teenagers... and Piper Laurie is absolutely incredible as Carrie's mother, don't tell me you didn't enjoy the way she played that psycho-neurotic bible-quoting infanticidal mother... and what bothers you in the pace of the movie, I find absolutely masterful, I mean the fact that the start is slow and the end is furious was made on purpose... Carrie's pent-up rage has to come out exploding and it's obvious that this rage creates innocent casualties mainly her teacher who gets cut up in half by the basketball basket and if you time the movie, you will find out that the big turning pointthe drop of the bucket filled with pig's blood during the crowning of Carrie as prom queen comes at approximately two-thirds of the movie which seems to me like a very good moment to unleash the fury of the final scenes... The whole prom night sequence is one of De Palma's best stuff and in this De Palma movie the use of split-screen is absolutely relevant and gripping... Oh I like this movie and I could go on and on... And I have not read the book, by the way.
Ok, you are surely right on what you say. I definetly expect too much from many movies, but frankly it happens quite often that some films are much better than expected (e.g. Taxi Driver, The Night of the Hunter, etc.).
I think that Piper Laurie's acting was a little exaggerated. She could have played her part in a much more subtle, and therefore more effective way.
The scene you mentioned with the bucket is surely the best part of the movie. There I felt that it was well-directed, powerful and the split-screen is indeed original. But this climax just came too late, as the first 60 minutes of the film had already let me down. All the events following the bucket scene have a rather anti-climactic effect on the whole film. Frankly, I still think the film lacks a good structure.
If you liked the film, fine, and, by God, you are by far not the only one to enjoy it. But, once more, I feel excluded from such an enthusiasm about a classic movie...
We definitely disagree because I think that Piper Laurie's chracter would have been less efficient if it had been played quietly as a subtle calculating charcater because, well, that's not what the character is and it's important for the rest of the story that Carrie's mother would be this crazed-out religious freak... and I have no idea how much I would enjoy this movie if I had any personal issues with religion... I mean, when Carrie gets locked up in the cupboard and the light is reflecting from the back of the eyes of that hyper-realistic crucifix it gives me the creeps everytime... And it's funny you would bring up Scorsese as an example of movies that turned out much better than you expected because that is something that never happened to me about Scorsese, I don't know why but I can never feel involved in his works and though I won't deny he is a great director, I can never consider him as a favorite of mine... oh, and be sure that I don't forget Brian De Palma hit one of Hollywood's lowest lows with his dreadful Mission to Mars, I suspect the guy lost his talent/drive/vision/whatever/it sometime during the shooting of Snake Eyes and probably won't find it ever again.
As you can see here above, I like/love most of Scorsese's films (except The Age of Innocence, which I found quite boring). You don't even like Taxi Driver or Raging Bull?
My fvaourite by De Palma is definetly The Untouchables and my least favourite Mission to Mars. I think Snake Eyes was OK, even though I should really push down my rating from 7 to 6.
Yes, I like some of Scorsese's movies but I don't like them all that much... I can't say more for my defense lol
Nice list! two other Brian Depalmer i recommend are Scarface & Carlito's Way, Both Star Pacino and Both Are Great!
Thx for the recommendations. I'm especially interested in Scarface.
:) it made My List :-) it is very good though. (though my review is poor, i'm not a good review writter)
Actually I once taped it, but I never watched it. Either I taped sth. else over it or I lost the tape...
I love the way you're organizing this list; it's really easy to read, and packs a lot of information in. On Spielberg, have you considered adding The Sugarland Express? His second film, after Duel (which I really love, as well), it's an entertaining, ultimately downbeat (unusual for Spielberg!) road-trip film.
For Lumet, I'd highly recommend The Pawnbroker.
Johnny Waco
Thanks. The Sugarland Express? Wow, I have never heard about that film. I'll try to catch it somewhere.
Prepare to be amazed by duel, pawnbroker, red river, and giu la testa... i'm sure you know my high regards for all those films... I also heard that the duelists was a good ridley scott film... but i've yet to see a good ridley scott film so i don't know... alien and the duelists are definitly going on my to see list
Alien is an awesome film. Brilliant!!!
Thx for the tips.
wow we clearly differ when it comes to burton
...and scorsese ;)
haha this is true :)
though i am looking forward to seeing departed and making the infernal affairs comparission.
well i think with burton is that i pretty much love anything he does, beetlejuice, Batman returns, Batman, Ed Wood & Edward Scissorhands would all be in my top30 so by that marking, i felt your rating of 3 at most was harsh, but i'm biast! haha
plus, some movies you rated very low to my complete suprise include one flew over, private ryan and fight club
Ah well, a three star-rating still means that it is an excellent film. ;)
2 stars for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a typo though.
haha we have a break through, i really enjoyed The Departed, yes it's true. i have of course some gripes with it , but i felt it kept to the original very well , i loved the setting, the whole irish thing and the soundtrack. great direction, wasn't fave movie of 2006, but in top10 possible top 5 with a rewatch.
next one i think i should see is mean streets, but my brother watched it and said he couldn't finish it, found it boring he says. but i've watched the opening sequence on youtube, and for that alone, it looks pretty good to me, so i might still give it a watch
BUT i still hate Taxi driver and Raging bull, so the war is not won yet :P
actually, i rewatched it today, cus my dad wanted to see it and i liked it even more, its now tired as my fave MS film with goodfellas.
finally someone to rank MASH a 0. i had such expectations, never never was i so desappointed. i saw the film like 2 in the morning on my laptop and was trying to understand if that really was the movie i had heard of. anyway... gosford park is great.
iwo jima perhaps some stars up? that man is really aging like a genius
Right on. Altman has made some great movies, but MASH ain't one of them. 1922: if you're looking for the best of Altman, check out The Long Goodbye, The Player, Short Cuts, or Nashville.
Glad to see you agree on MASH.
As for Letters from Iwo Jima, as much as I enjoyed it, I wouldn't rate it any higher. It's an outstanding work, but by no means as excellent as Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. I think.
